1 A Life

About

This is a small website in memory of James Robert Dean (I), my father. On March 9th of this 2018 year he would have turned 100. So, since it is such a nice round number, I am taking the opportunity to celebrate. It should be more fun than memorializing the final year of WWI, or the Influenza Pandemic, also each 100 years old.

JRD
JRD (for short) was the 5th and final child of John Godfrey and Zoe Toleta Corwin Dean, born in Glendale, California. He recalled going to Canada, then to the Dean Farm in Parma, Michigan when he was about two. In California, his family lived in Glendale (719 N Central Ave), then in Wildomar (near Lake Elsinore east of LA). There they had goats, he went to a one-room school, they had to travel far to the big ciy (Riverside). Before 1930 the family moved to Compton (School St?), then about a year later to a small 2 bedroom house in Dominguez (2713 Madison St, Long Beach – it is still there, significantly altered). He married my mother in 1949, lived in Los Angeles with my Aunt Jane and Uncle John until moving in to their new house in Lakewood (aka Long Beach). And, just to complete the thought – later lived in Garden Grove, Fountain Valley, Santa Ana, Williams, OR.

I have divided his life (very artificially) into components, for which I have pictures and information (from documents and his stories – some of which I wrote down). I know my memories are off or incomplete, so if any of the family has more or different info – please share! This is not meant to be a thorough biography, just some stuff I am having a good time going through and sharing.

Things Used To Be Different

People take an enormous number of pictures these days, especially of themselves (or their meals). My family has a fair number of pictures, but I have found most of them are of kids and airplanes. Mostly airplanes. There are not that many pictures of James R Dean (hereafter JRD), my father. It was a challenge to compile the ones displayed here – trying for one per decade, especially of his childhood (I count 5). Weddings, at model airplane contests, in the Navy, and with cars or airplanes make up the bulk of the JRD portfolio.
